I-5 closed South of Stockton

If you haven't heard, I-5 is closed about 30 miles south of Stockton from a sink hole. It's supposed to be back open in another day or two. It's closed just north of Highway 132.

But, if you need to travel that way take I-5 anyway. Because it's closed everybody is jumping over to 99 and 99 is packed! I-5 is almost empty because of the closure. But don't take the Caltrans detour. It is packed too.

If you're going North on I-5, take 580 toward San Francisco. Take the Mountain House Road exit and follow Mountain House Road over to 205. Take 205 east and it will merge right back onto I-5 for you. Do the opposite if heading south. 205 to Mountain House Rd to 580 and then head south and that puts you right back on I-5.
  • Not complaining. I am not sure that route even added that much extra travel time to our trip. Glad I saw your post. This forum is defiantly worth all we pay for it!! Hope to be able to help someone else in return!!
  • That little construction was nothing compared to what you would have had if you followed the posted detour. My understanding is it's jammed packed. They are taking all of I-5 traffic down onto a two-lane highway with stop signs. Even though a lot of traffic has moved over to 99, what's left on I-5 is still jamming up the detour.

I have to go to the other side of the closure later today and I'll be taking back country roads most of the way.
  • Route worked out great. Except for the little bit of road construction when we got on to Mountain House Road it was all smooth sailing. Thanks again.
  • You should be okay in the morning, but I'd sleep in and not leave Kitfox until at least 9am. With the rush hour and the road being close the commute traffic has been fairly heavy. But you are going opposite the main commute.
  • Thank you for the heads up. We are spending the night at Kit Fox Rv Park in Patterson just South of the 580. Heading North in the morning. We will be taking your advise for sure. Hopefully it will not be too jamb packed. Thanks again!!
