I-5 Stockton

Hi,
Will be heading south next weekend. Have heard that I-5 south through Stockton is worse than last year. Any ideas how to pass through this area without shaking the coach apart? Not too fond of concrete barriers either side of the coach: it gives me the "willies".
I've spent hours looking at the map trying to find a route. I did try 99 south from Lodi once but that rattled too.
Cheers

  • You aren't going to miss construction depending on how far South you're going. The suggestion I gave is the best way to avoid it through Stockton but both 5 and 99 are undergoing major repairs for their entire lengths. Lots of bridges being replaced and lots of road widening going on.
  • Thanks for the advise. That is one of the cross roads I was looking at, I figured it would get me by the barriers on 5 and miss most of the concrete in need of repair on 5. Glad I read this, we are on the road right now in Washington.
    Thanks again

Probably too late for this advice, but 99 is all tore up and under construction too all the way through Stockton too. If you're coming south you can come down 99 to 4 and take it across to 5 and you would miss the bulk of the construction. I-5 is tore up mostly North of 4 and 99 is tore up mostly south of 4.
  • Actually, from the bad part in the Stockton area to the south is just fine.

    Think we'll do that also.

Next month we'll be coming from Reno over I-80 with a first overnight at Kit Fox in Patterson before continuing on to San Diego.

Anyone know how the 5 is South of Patterson to Bakersfield?

Did 99 earlier this year heading North from Bakersfield and it was fine.
  • Race driver friend of mine once said, "It's amazing how small of a hole you can get the car through with your eyes closed".

    That's what I-5 is like.

  • We came through there in October and it was bad. Only about a foot clearance between the passenger side of the coach and the concrete barriers. Gotta be really on your toes. Get in the left lane as soon as you can because once you're in the right lane, the cars won't let you move over.

I kept my speed at about 40 - 45... got lots of finger gestures, but I was too busy with the steering wheel to return the favor.

    Good Luck.

  • Slow down a little and use 2nd lane whenever possible. Personally, I prefer 99. Cal-Trans has made considerable improvements.
  • I just close my eyes when I go through there:) Seriously though I drive through that area quite often with a class C pulling a cargo trailer and I always try to stay in the second lane from the right as do most of the truckers. That way you're not up against the Jersey barriers and don't have to continually keep moving over for merging traffic from the left. When I enter an area like that I just tell myself that I will be through it in less than 10 minutes and that seems to help, Jeff.
