I pay fuel taxes like everyone else. The road use tax is just an acknowledgement that trucks use more of the road services than other types of vehicles. It's not my fault that the states raid the fuel taxes for things other than roads. I would gladly pay more fuel tax if I was sure the money would go to roads.
Here in CA we pay the normal federal tax of $0.184/gal plus another $0.67/gal for diesel and then 13% sales tax is applied to the whole thing (yes, we even tax our taxes here).
And our roads suck.
Earlier this year I got fed up and bought a commuter bicycle and I ride from home to a commuter train and then ride the rest of the way to work from the final station. I'm on track to make my goal of pedaling 2,000 commuter miles by the end of the year. The bike hasn't paid for itself yet, but I'm getting close.
I'd rather show up sweaty to work than pay any more of these fuel taxes.
