Last year we used route 36 across MO between Hannibal and St. Joseph. All divided highway and in good condition. We continued on route 36 across KS and picked up I70 again at Colby KS. Route 36 is 2 lane across KS, but little traffic. Perhaps a bit slower than the Interstates, but a much more relaxing drive. If you go that way, the Pony Express Barn in Marysville KS was interesting. Prairie Dog State Park near Norton KS was a nice overnight and had W/E sites.
We have been using this or very similar for the last 10 Years and in my experience because it is a little shorter (miles)to the Denver area, it is almost the exact same driving time and just so much more enjoyable, even a little scenic. The only note is if you stay on it into Colorado it gets a little Bumpy, rough for the fist 30 miles or so then as you get back onto 70 it is not nearly so noticeable.
How ever you go enjoy the West -- this is the best time of year in the High Mountains and then a little later into the Grand Circle in Utah.
