Can't advise on I70, but have an alternate to offer.
Last year we used route 36 across MO between Hannibal and St. Joseph. All divided highway and in good condition. We continued on route 36 across KS and picked up I70 again at Colby KS. Route 36 is 2 lane across KS, but little traffic. Perhaps a bit slower than the Interstates, but a much more relaxing drive. If you go that way, the Pony Express Barn in Marysville KS was interesting. Prairie Dog State Park near Norton KS was a nice overnight and had W/E sites.
We have been using this or very similar for the last 10 Years and in my experience because it is a little shorter (miles)to the Denver area, it is almost the exact same driving time and just so much more enjoyable, even a little scenic. The only note is if you stay on it into Colorado it gets a little Bumpy, rough for the fist 30 miles or so then as you get back onto 70 it is not nearly so noticeable.
How ever you go enjoy the West -- this is the best time of year in the High Mountains and then a little later into the Grand Circle in Utah.
BOL - VeebyesExplorer IIAnother vote for either 36 or 50. Done them both, both ways. Much more relaxing.
- trailertravelerExplorerWe have done both US-36 and US-50/54/50 across Kansas and Missouri. In my opinion, both are better than I-70. but I prefer the blue roads. US-50/54 does merge with the interstates near St. Louis, but you are on the Southern Loop around the city.

X2
Traffic is horrible!
Doug - okgcExplorerThanks I will take a look at 36 also.
- ChinookExplorerI think that US-36 across Kansas is a lot smoother road than I-70.
I like to get off the interstate and see a little more. - CloudDriverExplorerCan't advise on I70, but have an alternate to offer.
