I 70 vs I 80 kc to cheyenne

We drove I 70 recently thru kansas is really nice road! Going from kc to cheyenne in a few weeks thought we'd try I 80 route just for different scenery, is it a good road, truck traffic?
  • Both I70 & I80 are major east west interstates and will have major big truck traffic. Cross country you will see more. Get a truck Atlas, if a truck can travel it so can an RV.

I agree and I live in Denver! Incidentally, besides I-70 and I-80, I've taken US 6/34 across southern Nebraska to Omaha and US 36 between Denver and Hannibal, MO. I prefer US 6/34 because cornfields are less boring than wheat fields! Actually, it's because there are some towns on US 6 with really interesting historic attractions--a Frank Lloyd Wright house in McCook of all places, an eclectic "pioneer village" museum in Minden, a great natural science museum in Hastings, some wonderfully restored railroad cars at the Stehr Museum in Grand Island, and others along the way.

  • I-29 north from KCMO to Iowa exit 10, Nebraska City, NE. Ne #2 toward Lincoln, joins I-80 west side of Lincoln.

I-80, exit #279 go south 10 miles to Minden, Museum of Mans Progress. Very interesting! They have a CG, motel and restaurant on site. A few years ago the admission ticket was good for any # of consecutive days. Could of changed by now though!

I-80 just west of the Minden exit is the Great Platte River Road Archway Monument. Interesting for a couple of hours.

In North Platte is the worlds biggest switch yards, 2 miles N/S and 8 miles E/W. they use 18 million gallons of diesel/month. The Golden Spike Tower has an observation deck with volunteers to explain the operations. Also the Buffalo Bill Ranch state historical park.

Sidney exit 55 is the “Home of Cabelas” main office and store. We o’nite there often.

As for big trucks I don’t think that you will be able to get away from them. I prefer to go I-80 because Co has that funny green stuff and I don’t know how many other drivers are “high”, fuel tends to be less expensive along I- 80 also.

We tried I-80 a couple times and had bad luck - Heavy truck traffic - Bouncy Pavement Joints - just an unpleasant drive - Take a Look at Route 36 - we usually pick it up in Hannibal and take it to Denver/Boulder - Nice road - Little better scenery than the I's - not many trucks.
