I-75 north through Atlanta

Next week we are leaving Florida via I-75 going to Nashville area, we will be staying the night near Perry and will go through Atlanta late morning. My question is it better to stay on 75 straight through the city, or jump over to I-285 and run it back to 75?
  • West side bypass - rough, lots of trucks.
East side bypass - traffic, north east corner and I-20 worst.
Through town is my choice even when visiting the BIL southwest out by Fairburn.

Hmm...I'm going to Florida next week, going the other way and staying at Perry (Cordele) as well. I wonder if we will cross paths?
  • We live in north Georgia and when travel to Florida via I-75 we choose to go straight through (stay on I-75) whole lot less truck traffic. I stay in the 3rd lane from left and have really no issue. Wife as co-pilot keeps an extra eye on lane changes, but manuvering is relatively easy. But, as said before, it is 'crap shoot'...

I'd take the western side of 285 - less traffic.
  • This has been discussed a lot. Try searching this Forum for `through Atlanta' then search the results for `bypass' and read on.
    We always bypass.

why would you not go 75 to 10 to Marianne,Fla and then take 231 from there to Montgomery and the 65 right up thru Birmingham to Nashville....what a great ride...nice campgrounds all along 231.....hardly any traffic like Atlanta...and might even be somewhat shorter...Chuck

Seems like everytime we go through the lanes keep ending on us and we have to keep moving over....

I guess it is always under construction there...

  • We have been thu Atlanta 4 times North to South & South to North with the MH. We used the Easterly Bypass each time. Stay calm as the trucks will be pushing the speed limit and you.

  • We live in the suburbs of Atlanta. When driving the motor home we always bypass downtown, so definitely 285!! If you do take 75 through downtown stay in the third lane from the right!
  • Going through Atlanta is always a cr@p shoot. Your best bet would probably be to listen to one of these radio stations: http://www.wsbradio.com/ when you leave Perry and decide based on current conditions. I think they do traffic every 10 minutes.
