- AndymonExplorerGo see Lake Lake McConaughy about 3 miles north of Ogallala. Used to be the third largest earthen dam in the world. 3 miles wide and 27 miles long. Great fishing for sure!! I'd avoid I80 and opt for Hwy 30. Even though seeing some of the small almost ghost towns, it's not a bad road.

When you're driving at 60-70 MPH across Nebraska, just remember those families who drove that same route in Conestoga wagons covering anywhere from 3 to 10 miles per day.
Yep the ones that quit the trip to California settled Nebraska. - rockhillmanorExplorerThere are parts of I80 where the road is not real smooth.
I found that if you were passing and near a sizable town the roads were maintained. The long stretches where there were really no towns nearby, just the corn....the roads where rough. Apparently the corn doesn't pay highway taxes. - JimFromJerseyExplorerWe did it East to West back in 2012, and I-70 West to East coming back. I'd do I-80 over I-70 between the same longitudes, if you ask me.
Some minor constructions in Nebraska, but that was 2 years ago, may be totally different now.
No problems with elevation changes, obviously.
We did get off I-80 for a while in the middle of Nebraska for two reasons - just to be on a DIFFERENT road for a while, and to help burn up a tank of E-85 corn oil that was wreaking havoc with our old Bounder 454 engine. - Grey_MountainExplorerI've stayed at the Cabela's RV park in Sydney a few times. They had a shotgun there for a mere $113,000. SWMBO would not let me buy it.
Shoulda bought the shotgun and left her in Sydney.
GM - hellbird503ExplorerThanks to everyone for your insights. Drove I 90 across Min and Sd last year. Road surface in Min was not good but good in
SD - Jim_ShoeExplorerCabela's flagship store is located in Sidney, NE. Also a small FHU RV park and a corral for your horses. :) On one visit, I started talking to the greeter at the door. Turned out he was one of the original founders. Interesting how they started in a second floor walkup, hand tying fishing flies. They're going to open a new store near me in Cincinnati. Quality folks and quality products. Looking forward to it.
- notruffinitExplorerI think the OP is wondering about the road surface, but since we have all hijacked this post, I feel there is a special beauty in every route and road in this great country, The "fly over" states of the Midwest have their own special beauty. Wyoming, Nebraska, North Dakota, Iowa.... All of them.

To those that think this drive across Iowa is boring with no sights have not crossed the high desert in Wyoming, I90 across North Dakota. I love the beauty of the different greens this time of year. JMHO.
I90 goes across Wyoming, South Dakota, and Minnesota, not North Dakota or Iowa. It is beautiful on the Western side, Buffalo Gap, Bad Lands and the Black Hills, but in between Buffalo Gap and Sioux Falls it's almost as bad as 80 across Nebraska.
Sorry, meant I94
