I 90 between Spokane and Missoula

Hi All - Opinions wanted on I-90 between Missoula and Spokane. I know there is a pass....we will be going over around 4th of July we have a 36' diesel pusher with a toad that doesn't do well pulling hills in the heat. Anything we should be aware of?

Thanks!!

We were camping at Farragut State Park last summer, and just for giggles drove up to Sandpoint. Knew nothing about the place.

Wow, what a neat little town and just spectacular scenery.

I'll give a rousing thumbs up to greg121's suggestion.

  • 4th of July isn't too bad, the bigger pass is Lookout Pass. If you are having heating issues you may want to stay in the Coeur d Alene area and hit the passes in the morning when its cooler.
  • Actually it is one of my favorite passes over the rockies. Climb doesn't seem to bother me as much as the twists and bends on descents. You will have traffic due to the time of the year but an okay drive. I do Moses Lake to Missoula in a day no problem.
  • Actually you have two passes, in Idaho is 4th of July pass, going east it is really fairly tame. Most of the grade is actually climbing out of CdL.

The real grade is Lookout, both west and east bound. A good rule is never go down a grade faster then you went up.
  • I pull this and all the other passes with our gasser MH and have no problems. As Twindy said, don't lug you engine down, manually down shift to keep your RPMs in the proper torque range.
  • We pulled it with our combo this past mid June without any problems. From Spokane we went to the Grand Coulee Dam. Some pretty good hills and hollows up that way. No problem there either.
