Just returned recently from our summer trip to New England. We paid a number of toll fees as we traveled up to Maine before heading west to Niagara Falls,N.Y. We got on I-90 west of Albany and got off near Buffalo. Absolutely shocked when told the toll fee (for 239 miles) would be $42, since we had a 30' 5er. Absolutely shameless that New York would want tourists to use campgrounds, buy gas and groceries and visit tourist sites and then charge EXCESSIVE FEES at the toll booth. I was told that if I pulled a travel trailer, the fee would only be $21. Needless to say, I WILL NOT be traveling to New York again. I don't mind a $3 or $4 charge as was the case in Maine each toll; but a $42 charge is absolute highway robbery. Adding insult to injury was the fact that I-90 was not in great shape compared to some other interstates.
Since you've seen Niagara Falls, another option in the future and not mentioned is go I86 near Erie PA to I88 near Binghamton NY and you'll end in Albany NY w/o any tolls. This will bypass Buffalo and the expensive Thruway tolls.
