I-95 SB from DC worst in United States

an article in the paper quotes a study by Seattle based traffic data firm Inrix that the SB stretch of I-95 35 miles N of and to Fredericksburg VA is the single worst traffic hot spot in the US.
the "good" news is that the NB side only makes it to number 7.
this is why I always recommend coming down 15/17 if possible.

  • I-81 is not the easy bypass that it used to be. It is headache thanks to everyone trying to bypass I-95. Bumper to bumper traffic on a 4 lane mostly rural interstate. The only thing I-95 has going for it are the multiple lanes.
  • I-95 from Fredericksburg, VA all the way north to Maine is nothing but a headache.
  • Drove that for my job for years. Retirement is even sweeter when reminded of what you had to do for a paycheck.
  • The added benefit of the I-81/US50/US17 route for us New Englanders is that it also misses the I-95 section through CT and NY.
  • I avoid that section of I95 like the plague! When heading South, I always take I81 to 17 in VA, then 17 to I95 below Fredericksburg. May be longer, but sure is a lot more pleasant and predictable than I95 around Baltimore and D.C.
  • We've been through that section at all times of the day and it's horrible.
  • We travel from Cape Cod to Fredericksburg VA (usually on Jan 1) our first day headed south and hit DC around noon - 1 pm. The only place we hit stop and go traffic is from DC to Fredericksburg. It is without question the absolutely worst part of the trip and usually lasts that entire stretch.
  • Our "politicians" are a joke.....incase you haven't noticed.

Our population has been growing and GROWING for the last 50 years since the Interstate highways were started and guess what ?? The "interstate" parts haven't been growing to keep up. Neither have the parts around a lot of major cities.

    I-95 is a prime example.....along almost it's whole length.
PACKED most of the time and in BAD shape in lots of areas.
  • Again...it mostly depends on what time you drive this road. I've been on it a few times...no problems (at least for me....I-95 thru Philly to me, is "normal"..at least what I'm used to...and that is how I judge other roads.(traffic-wise) ((Most of which are so much better..including what the OP mentions....LOL))

For me, one of the worst roads (rough) is I-10 thru Louisiana. I take I-12 instead. Of course, where I-12 rejoins I-10 (going west) is a nightmare, but whattayado ? Gotta do it.
