We are planning to be in Ft.Collins about the 16th of Sept. leaving about the 19th headed to New Mexico. What route would advise taking. I am even looking at going 80 miles east then south on route 71 to US 350 to Trinidad.
If I were you I'd look at getting into the Mountains to see the Aspen Changing.
Head on into Denver on I-25 to Golden - head out RT 6 along Clear Creek - then on through the Tunnel on I-70 to RT91 towards Leadville - If we have already had a few cold nights RT 25 toward Minturn will be Beautiful - then down to Twin Lakes ant RT 82 in the Toad and Independence Pass/Maroon Bells - Last little side trip Ouray/Telluride/Silverton - the San Juan's - just beautiful.
Then on down 550 into New Mexico, no traffic - no high speed drivers - just slow changing Aspen.
Aspen turning GOLD.
That's how I'd avoid the I-25 traffic South of Denver.
