I80 and I70

Ohio is fine, Indiana not so much. Parts of IL not great either, but once your cross the river the road is in fine shape all the way to Denver.

I-80 in PA is fine - the only problem is it becomes the Ohio Turnpike and that means $$.

Interstate highways are generally a better option for ANY place you want to go if speed is important to you. If you want to actually SEE anything during the trip back roads are your best option. Main difference between 80 and 70 is the number of trucks you like traveling with. 80 is the major east west truck route from coast to coast (not that they are scarce on 70, just less of them.

At ANY given time during warmer weather, either of those routes will be under construction an many places and in major cities that construction can be pretty much a constant thing but even then they are usually the most economic (in time and money) way to go.

If you choose I-80, don't miss the exit sign for What Cheer, IA. Exit 201. I bit the bullet and took the exit. Nothing special about the town about 20 miles south, but you have to give those folks credit for having a sense of humor.

When I'm not running around the country in my F 350 and TT I'm driving a semi truck to the west coast and back. I like to take I 80 out and take I 70 back it kinda breaks it up a bit. Both have construction this time of year and both have trucks on them but I 70 in Indiana is by far the worst 3rd world, roughest, bumpiest interstate in America !!!

I agree. Once you hit about middle of PA, I70 is the main commuting route to DC, VA, and points south on 95. Friday eves you don't want to be going West, Sun eves the heavy traffic goes East as everyone returns to the cities.

You want to choose your time of day carefully to avoid sitting in slow heavy traffic.

If you're willing to split the difference and time/speed is not a major factor, consider picking up US 36 in Hannibal MO (from I-72) and taking it all the way across MO and KS. It's a good road, far less traffic than the 2 interstates, towns are spread out every 30-40 miles and aren't really a big slow down -- we ain't talking big cities! In NW Kansas you can head up and grab US 34 and take that into NE Colorado, will take take you right over to I-25 then head north to where ever your destination is in SE Wyoming.

I-80 is for trucks (JMHO) and I'll do anything to avoid Chicago.

What we have done, for the last 8 years or so, is head to Champaign on I-74 then I-72 to Hannibal and Rt 36 all the way to Byers, Colorado then we avoid some of the Interstates and have a good drive through the middle of the country. The road is great and the drive is so much less stress (no traffic) and the change of scenery is not bad either.
