I85 Richmond to Charlotte

Planning a trip to Carowinds with the coaster club, and debating if I want to change my Cabin Rental to a campsite. How is the terrain on I85 from Richmond to Charlotte? If possible, compare it to a route in Southern New England?? We will be coming from Rhode Island, so it will be a long drive.

Thanks for the input guys. Adding that option of bringing "Rooby" with us, and stopping at KD, Six Flags America, and/or Dorney on the way home.

We usually by the season pass and do kings dominion a few times a year.. We have an office in Ashland VA ,must about 10 miles south of KD.. I can work out of there at any time , so I do in the summer
We just bought season passes. Our coaster club has events at Kings Island and Cedar Point also this year.

The kids love the coasters at both... 2 years ago they were at Kings Dominion in the AM.. I left the office , broke camp and drove to Charlotte.. They were on the coasters in Carowinds in the PM..they thought that was the greatest...I also have an office in Charlotte so we do them both during the summer...
If they ever really want to get into it, there are numerous coaster clubs. I belong to Coaster Crew (www.coastercrew.net - Web site is being redone). Most usually have perks, and at club events, we usually have exclusive ride time on rides, either before and/or after normal operating hours.

  • nice easy drive. a little "busy" durham to Greensboro but much of the worst in that section is 3 or 4 lane. IIRC
    bumpy
  • Every year we travel from Richmond to Carowinds and take 85.., the road is nice... There are spots that you will think that your the only one on that road... Compared to NE roads ??? They are smooth , well maintained ( in my eyes) , and it's an easy ride ... We usually leave Richmond around noon or 1:00pm..and arrive into Carowinds about 6:00 or so...once you hit the Raliegh area you will see traffic getting a bit more , but still light..
