Icefields/Jasper/Revelstoke ??'s

Planning a 2 or 3 week trip up to Jasper and back home to TriCities probably in September. Looking at recreation map, wondering aboot where to stay for a few days each. Plan on looping from Jasper to Kamloops and on to Revelstoke for our itinerary. Nothing firm yet, just in the planning stage.

Trailer is 34 ft oal, and we are 53 ft total. Notice that a lot of the PP's and Nat Parks may not accommodate us. Would like to find basically boondocking spots or campgrounds (obviously not in the Nat Parks), with an occasional full service night or two. Will be hauling our canoe, so nice quiet paddling lake sites would be great!! Asking for a lot, I know!!

Just hoping that some of you on this great site will have some great ideas for us. Thanks in advance!!!

New post at end of string!!!!
  • No 'boondocking" allowed in Canadian national Parks. However there are several Park cgs on your route that have no services ( except free firewood!).

Waterfowl lakes are great canoeing areas. Just north of Bow Summit, between Lake Louise and Jasper.
  • This is at Revelstoke
    Skytrek Adventure Park
this is zip lining and walking in the trees
    it a blast
  • Gerry; You might consider stopping at Waterfowl lake campground on the way down south from Jasper on the Icefield's parkway. It is unserviced, quiet, and has a very nice canoeing lake. We easily got in and are 39 feet overall so I am sure you could find a site for your rig. Looked quite easy to get a canoe to the water though maybe a carry from your campsite.

You would also find Bow lake worth canoeing from the picnic site at the end of the lake (no overnight campground here). Finally, people canoe on both Morraine lake and Lake Louise though normally with rental canoes they rent at the lakes. It would be a bit of a walk with your canoe from the parking to both of these lakes so maybe not practical.

There are a number of lakes around Jasper but I don't know which if any you can get to with a canoe. Worth checking though. Also check out Maligne lakes which is reached from Jasper.
  • You have to go by Revelstoke and see the railroad museum. It's a great place. One of the neat things is the inside full size locomotive and usually there will be one of the old timers there who used to operate it to answer questions about it and tell stories.

We got there right a closing time one evening so we spent the night in the parking lot. We did the museum the next day. There was a terrible accident out on the highway and was shut down for about eight hours so we went up to hydro-electric dam on the Columbia River. It was maybe a 30 minute drive from the museum. Because of the wreck we spent a second night in their parking lot. If you do spend the night there, be aware the main rail line runs by on the side of the parking lot - a train goes by about every 30 minutes. Luckily I can sleep through about anything.
