Blue Ridge Parkway in the fall.

X3! Plus Old NC 105, which is a dirt road up the Blue Ridge Escarpment on the west side of Linville Gorge almost the the BRP and Linville Falls. Going up, 4WD is pretty much required in wet weather, but it's scenic as heck in the fall and winter.
Of all fall color drives, it's my most favoritest long day trip loop. Down I-40 to Lake James, up the BRP on Old 105, short hikes & lunch at at Wiseman's View & Linville Falls, home on the BRP. On the right day, you can see all four seasons in a day with the change in elevation, summer at the bottom, early winter at the top.
