Idaho Hgy 71 from Cambridge to Brownlee

I am planning on using this route in early June. Leaving Arizona and meeting relatives from Oregon there for a few days. I will be pulling a 16' boat behind the 28' rig in my sig. Anyone familiar with the road, we are used to mountain travel and have been double towing for many years so it is something we are accustomed to. But I also plan ahead?? Having said that? I am hoping for some insight!
Thanks in advance..

Actually, the purpose of meeting relatives at Brownlee is so they can pull our boat into Oregon for us! Of course we will camp and fish there a couple days.
We sure wish they would change their (Oregon) rules. This will be our 6th summer in Oregon and I enjoy fishing so we always have someone meet us near the border and pull our boat into Oregon for us. From that time on I make two trips everywhere we go if I want the boat, which is most of the time. It is a pain and added costs (last year xtra 1,200 miles) but we spend 4 months there and I fish about 45 days last year so, for me, it is worth the hassle!
Thanks for the warning though, I know your intentions are in the right place!
  • We aren't allowed to double up in Oregon...you're setting yourself up for a ticket. Check this link (page 16)LINK. We've heard there is an agreement around the Snake River area between the states to allow Idahoans to come into Oregon to pull double, but I can't say that's true. Murphsmom is right...people do drive that road all the time. We camp there every year (sometimes twice a year). We've driven 36 ft MH and 5th wheels over that road. Around the dam it IS windy and going uphill all the way. The road is narrow......take it slow (something you won't be able to prevent) and you'll do fine if your vehicle is able to tow a big load. :) :) LOVE that part of the country..... If you have time, stop for a night or two and drive up to Hell's Canyon Dam.......it's amazing!!!
  • It's a winding road, but there are people pulling big outfits down there all the time. I personally haven't double pulled, but I'm sure it's doable.
