They don't know much about solar. They don't know how to live on solar and propane without a generator and are not willing to learn, and they don't care about noise, smell and costs. Basically, they run a generator because they want to.
I stayed on camps in Baja in winter with mostly long-term residents, almost everybody had some solar on the roof and most people were running generators 5-6 hours a day. There was no rain, and very few partially cloudy days - on those cloudy days they were running it from dawn to dusk. Only 5%-10% were not running it at all, or so little that I didn't notice.
