Rocmoc, people that I saw in Baja running generators 6 hours on a sunny day and 12 hours on a cloudy, with 150-250W solar panels, did not have any special luxuries. They just wanted to follow same habits as in their shore homes and didn't try to adjust anything, to reduce the genny time. Why - I don't know, most likely because they didn't want to adjust. In other words - they "wanted" to run a generator :) . They didn't care about noise and smell, and even though most of them were wintering permanently or semi-permanently, only 1/3 or 1/4 had some enclosure around the generator.
27" CRT TV (those old cubes that you don't see in stores anymore) is not a luxury, and neither is a breadmaker when there is a good bakery in town. They were running a regular furnace because didn't know and didn't care to know about vented catalytic heaters. They used regular incandescent bulbs and big old vacuums that they brought from their homes or bought in a second hand store. They were running a microwave and a vacuum at the same time even when they could've avoided this. I didn't see any luxuries, only poor energy management.
