Insurance claim

Our Class A motorhome was hit by another driver backing out of a driveway. The accident is not our fault. We were able to drive the motorhome to an RV repair facility for an estimate for insurance but are now being informed they can't do a complete estimate as the sidewall is de-laminated and they cannot do that repair there. The claims adjuster wants an estimate. We think the motorhome should be a write off. Has anyone in Ontario, Canada encountered a situation like this and what were the results?

  • When our motorhome was hit by the other vehicle, we were originally told that our repair facility could indeed do the repairs. After examining the damages, they informed us that they could not do the repair. The other vehicle backed into us when we were driving by and hit the whole end side and took a hole out of the back. It appears that the impact caused the de-lamination as we were not aware of any problems before the accident.
  • It appears to me that the most of you are suggesting that the delam repair should be done on the insurance's dime. Yes? I sort of thought delam was the result of water engressing or some other cosmetic fault. If that is the case..why the expectation that the insurance company would pay for that?

Not necessarily. Since we don't know the insurance company, it's possible that they insure a minimal number of RV's. If that's the case, relying on a repair shop of the policyholder's choosing would certainly be the way to go.
  • Your current repair shop should know someone who does delam work. Some insurance companies (mine included) don't have a clue when it comes to RV repair and totally rely on the repair shop.

  • When my MH was rear-ended, the insurance adjuster looked at it and took a bunch of pictures of the damage. He then stated that he had no idea on the price of MH parts, so I should take it to any one of 4 places and they would pay whatever it cost. 3 were RV repair/sales facilities, 1 was a fiberglass repair specialist. Went with the fiberglass repair specialist and no regrets.
  • Was the delam caused by the accident? Otherwise you need to find an RV place that will give an estimate. Likewise the insurance company should have an adjuster that can make their own estimate.

Find the biggest nicest place around if you are looking for an estimate high enough to total the RV. Be careful what you wish for.
  • If I were you I would ask The adjuster or agent how to go about getting a total estimate.
  • Without an estimate or estimates to repair how would you know? What’s the MH’s value without the damages?
