I'm in central Maine..maybe 400 miles away from you in Quebec. For me, it is worth the extra distance going to Mexico. Where will you get an ocean front campsite in Florida for less than $100 - if you could even find one.
Florida and Mexico are apples and oranges. For me, it's worth the extra time and money to go to Mexico. I'm still working - not yet retired, so if I can stay 6 weeks in Mexico I'm lucky. Right now a motorcycle is my choice, but once I retire it will be an RV again.
You are right, camping on the beach in Floride is as far as I know, impossible, or it would be place I could not afford. Last year I went to Siesta Key in the keys, it is right on the ocean, well on the gulf, ocean is on the other side of the road, but I was able to use the zodiac to go fishing from the campground, very nice place, but, over $2000 for one month, and this was a cheap site, 2 services, the 3 services where like close to $3000 a month.
Like you say, the possibility to be on the ocean is something very different from what you have in FL, and from all over USA as a matter of fact. Texas has something cheap on the beach of Padre Island, but it is pretty cool in the winter and windy. California has Pismo Beach, but the water is so cold and in winter it is quite cold by the ocean.
Maybe I will find my place and go back, the beach or near beach camping in Mexico is what I want to see.
