Jackson Wy to rt 80 east

Staying at Gros Ventre, I see two options.

go north a bit pickup 287 thru dubois, Lander to rawlings.

Or

rt 191 to Rock Springs

I heard the grades on 191 are 7-8%, but can confirm.

anyone make either of those routes

  • just spoke to local guy said the same, 191 flatter and quicker.

As far as boring heading E on 80 sounds like really boring..........
  • We drove from Rock Springs up to Jackson back in 2012. The only grade I can recall is just before Hobart Junction. Not sure whether I used lower gears going down, but I probably did, as I like to save the brakes.

This year at the end of May we drove from Casper to Lander using route 220 to Muddy Gap and then route 287 to Lander. A couple of days later we drove 287/26 over the Togwotee Pass to Jackson. I recall a pretty good downgrade (which you will be climbing) on 287 south of Lander, a very gradual climb between Dubois and the Pass and a steeper downgrade to Moran Junction. Nothing I would hesitate to do again. No experience driving 287 between Muddy Gap and Rawlins.

Personally I think that route 191 is boring. Routes 26 and 287 are a much more interesting drive. You could also make the short side trip to Sinks Canyon State Park.
  • I've been on both and I agree, there are ups & downs on both, but no grades over 6% on either route. If anything the grades on 191 are slightly less steep, but not enough to change your choice. Since you're starting close to half way between Jackson & Moran, To me its a matter of whether you're headed east or west after hitting I80.
  • there are no grades of any note between Jackson and Rock Springs on 191.
on 287, there is a climb from Moran Junction, but not a bad one and then a descent to Dubois, but again, not especially bad.
We've been both ways several times over the years.
