Why do some Americans think that every country should do things the same as Uncle Sam? British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba have Provincial Auto Insurance. They are slightly different. In Manitoba you can still buy private insurance to cover anything that the basic policy does not cover. Or you can buy more coverage from the Province. Your Registration is also your proof of insurance. You cannot get a vehicle registered without insurance as it is all done at the same time. Although I am a capitalist who normally does not like Governments being involved in business it is a very good system and most people are very pleased. As for having your registration in the vehicle: Every 18 wheeler has a book with all the registrations, proof of insurance, ICC stuff and more. That book stays with the tractor. The trailer registration stays in an external document holder on the front of the trailer. So they too keep the registration IN the vehicle! CR has gone through hell. First his vehicle was stolen at gunpoint. He got almost no support from the Police, Aduana or the insurance company. Surely we in the forum can support him without getting snarly!!! There is a big lesson to be learned: Mexico is still backwards when it comes to actually helping tourists instead of throwing sticks in the wheels. Aduana has a regulation that defies logic. If CR's vehicle was stolen in the USA Highway patrol in any state would have come to his assistance. Procedures and forms would be available at the nearest Post. They would have actively searched for the vehicle. Many travelers do not understand how Mexican Gov. officials do their job. In order to avoid paperwork often a reported crime is filed in the Basura! Cops don't like having to search in an area where there may be Cartel activity. Generally the cops take the easy way out and do nothing! Of course there are exceptions. CR is being punished for having his vehicle stolen! This is so wrong!! If this wrong is not "righted" then travelers should vote with their feet. I admire CR's attitude but if it happened to me I would just say Adios to Mexico. This story will spread in all the RV parks in snowbird areas and Mexico will suffer an even greater loss in RV tourism. Often posters try and convince newbies that Mexico is safe and a great place to visit. I concur but how can we keep supporting Mexico travel if we risk a potential loss of not only our vehicles but a bunch of $$ to the Mexican Government. The loss of the vehicle is covered by insurance. The hassle and cost of satisfying Aduana is a slap in the face.
