How long did it take to get your TIP cancelled? And how did you go about it? This is a learning experience so if you'd like to share I imagine more folks than just myself would love to learn about it.
Number One. If the ministerio publico accuses a driver of being under the influence of ANYTHING while driving, they have no insurance. A person can drive drunk or stoned, hit someone else and guess what, the innocent party they hit cannot collect a dime of insurance.
Without LEGAL COVERAGE your butt sits in prison until the authorities satisfy themselves they have resolved culpability for the accident. Cut and dried accidents are different than accidents that are contested by both drivers. And the jail thing only applies to the uninsured, and insured motorist who does not have legal coverage AND the accident is deemed serious - personal injury, or property damage in the thousands of dollars. Fenders benders are handled on the spot, unless they are contested - they usually aren't.
Lewis & Lewis was one of the first Surplus Line Brokers to make mandatory Legal Coverage. Unless you have dealt with a ministerio publico in person you cannot imagine the red tape involved. And until you have seen the inside of a reclusorio (state prison) the word "jail" is meaningless. When I wrote "aggressive" I meant prompt efforts to keep my butt out of the prison.
Here is a link to what happens in a serious automobile accident in which injury or a great deal of property damage is involved...

This gentleman had LOTS of liability insurance but no Legal Coverage
