Our claim is very slowly getting to a finish. We have had a FINAL OFFER (!) and apparently a cheque is on the way. I guess one shouldn't count on a totally satisfactory outcome when you aren't driving a new vehicle. The evaluation on the truck was done for Texas (you know, the home of cheap trucks) and they apparently added about $1700 for the tow equipment (5th wheel hitch, brake controller, air suspension with on-board compressor, in-box tool box and camper tie-downs). Anyone towing a 5th wheel knows that the figure quoted is about 1/2 of what it costs to buy that equipment and have it installed. On the bright side they are paying our transportation home and an overnight hotel in Guad, which is all satisfactory and of course is stated in the policy (which also says extra equipment is covered). My advice for anyone towing, especially a 5th wheel, is to make sure that whoever you insure with is aware of your equipment and it's cost. I will not be insuring with HDI again, as they don't seem to be able to deal rationally with the process and I had to get the agent involved (Mexadventure) to get HDI off the "title" issue. As has been stated on here, B.C. has no separate title. I told them that at least 5 times and told them about the transfer process here (registration & signed transfer form) which they deemed OK. I submitted those documents from Arizona, then when I got home, I had an e-mail from them asking for an "original signed title" - back to square one ! It seems they couldn't figure it out that if they phoned ICBC (numbers supplied) or any one of thousands of ICBC agents here, that they would hear the same explanation I had given them numerous times !
I'll maybe get back on here when it's all wrapped up, but in the meantime my advice is to avoid HDI, especially if you are towing anything. The stranded trailer is another issue that wasn't dealt with - does any insurer offer to take your trailer back to the border ?
It seems that the agent is the important link in the process of settling a claim if the company is being difficult. Mexadventure was a big help and I'll continue to deal with them, but I won't buy HDI products. Excuse my bit of a rant, but I seem to have been provoked more than a little ! RYV
