Kansas to Florida route advise?

We have never been to the east coast. We are currently in southern Kansas and want to travel to the Gulf coast & Orlando to visit the mouse. It looks like we can go down to around Fort Worth, then San Antonio & across I 10 to 75. The alternate looks like it would take us through Oklahoma, Little Rock, Memphis and down. We want to see historic sites and pretty scenery, but also want decent roads and to avoid freezing pipes... What do you suggest & why?

We will want hookups. Any special places to stay along the way?

  • here's how we go from Oklahoma to Florida:
I-35 south. We like Twin Fountains RV Park in Oklahoma City.
I-35 south to Denton TX. We stay at McClains Wagon Master RV Park in Sanger TX. Not fancy but good for overnight stop. If you want to see Fort Worth, we like either Cowtown RV park or Oak Creek RV Park in Weatherford TX. It's a better park but more of a drive into Fort Worth. Also there is a corps of engineers park at Benbrook Lake that is closer to the Stock Yards.
    US380 east to Greenville TX.
    US69 south to I-20.
I-20 east to Shreveport LA - we stay at Fernbrook RV Park in Longview TX.
    I-49 south to Lafayette LA
    I-10 east to I-12
I-12 east back to I-10 east - we stay at Lakeside RV Park in Livingston LA.
continue on I-10 east. Our next stop is the KOA in Milton FL.
Just east of Tallahassee, take exit 225 (US 19S)
In Perry FL take US129-27 to US 41 south
US 41 south to Williston FL (stay at Williston Crossings RV Park)
Continue on US41 south to Dunnellon FL and stay at Rainbow Springs State Park. (make reservations) This is a short drive from Williston so you can move RV sites or stay at either one.
Continue on US41 south to Inverness FL
take FL 44 east to I-75.
I-75 south to either Tampa then I-4 to Orlando or take US50 east to Orlando.
If you go toward Tampa, we like Quail Run RV Park in Wesley Chapel.
If you aren't going to stay at Disney Fort Wilderness, we like Tropical Palms RV Park in Kissimmee. They have a shuttle $$ to Disney.
    Have a safe trip!!

To each his own, I guess. FW, Austin, San Antonio and Houston. I've been to them all, but never on the same trip. I think I would try I-49 for a more direct route, unless you wanted to visit those cities. Maybe someone else could chime in on that.
Once on I-10, there's the Battleship in Mobile. Yes, the Blackwater SP is nice and its pretty close to the beaches. There is also Florida Caverns SP. If your looking for scenery, I-75 is not the best place to see any. I would suggest getting off I-10 east of Tallahassee and go down US-19, if you were going to Manatee Springs. Then you could cut over to Alt-27 to 75 and TP to Walyworld.

Maybe true, but whatever you do get off of Hwy 19 before you get near Tarpon Springs or be prepared for some of the worst traffic that exists in Florida. Get off after Crystal River. Hwy 19 will run you past Homossassa Springs which is a good park to check out, you will see Manatees since they have some injured critters that they keep there.
  • Memphis to Birmingham, Montgomery, and then work your way to Mariana ,FL and pick up I 10 to I 75 is the shortest....... But I 35 to Dallas to I 20 or Gainesville, TX then 380 east to 69 to I 20 to Shreveport, LA I 49 to I 10 I 12 back to I 10 to I 75 is the fastest.....Going to San Antonio, TX is way out of route.

  • I-10 east of San Antonio is, in my opinion, boring with the hassle of driving thru Houston. But we've tried other routes and haven't found anything much better so that's the way to go. There are some nice Texas State Park campground just north of San Antonio.

After hearing about Louisiana from people here we decided to try a couple day stop on our way back this year. It was soggy and had terrible roads and the traffic was bad too. Maybe we picked the wrong spot. We certainly picked the wrong campground.

So we just try to get by that stretch of road as quickly as can be done but you'll have to find a spot to overnight. Once you get into the Florida panhandle there are some nice campgrounds. We stopped at Eagles Landing CG in Holt and it was nice for an overnight. Blackwater River State park is in the same area and is a nice park with the CG on the river.

Once you turn down I-75 there are a number of State Parks built around big springs. All are excellent for a couple days stop. Later in the winter you have a good chance to see manatees at some of them. Manatee State Park in particular.

Take I-75 down to the Florida Turnpike and follow that to Orlando. If you want to do the beaches then take a day trip over to Daytona Beach from Orlando.
