....with roughly 45% of Mexican citizens living in poverty and ~10% of those living in abject/dire poverty (living in poverty in Mexico isn't the same as Canada/USA), this isn't surprising. Now, you have to distinguish between hard-working Mexican citizens living in poverty and making a subsistence go of it, and street drug addicts and the dispossessed mentally ill. Being compasionate to street addicts/mentally ill is all well and good, but it will not guarantee that your property will not be vandalized as you travel through (any) 3rd World country.
When you travel through 3rd World conditions, you have to expect that your $100,000 to ~$500,000 gleaming (or, not so gleaming) rolling stock could/may/will acquire some battle scars. That's the risk you have to assume.
