Knoxville, TN to Cumberland, MD

How is the route taking 81N to 70W at Hagerstown, MD to Cumberland, MD?

Not towing but driving a large U-Haul moving truck and would like to avoid steep mountains. Travelling the end of February so snow and ice could be a factor.

The other route I saw from Knoxville is 81 - 77 - 79 - 68 - 70E

Thank you for your help.
  • Maybe a look at Mountain Directory East would be helpful.
  • That is an easy drive. As mentioned there are a few hills. The road is in real good shape. Once you get north of Knoxville, the traffic is light until you get to MD. I drive from northern Virginia to New Orleans and back several times a year and I-81 is the easiest part of the drive.
  • You will HAVE to cross a few mountains, but I-81 is an easy drive. If you take into consideration the number of 18 wheelers that utilize this route each and every day, it's the best route. (Every 2 out of 3 vehicles on I-81 is a truck, from some VDOT report I saw the other day).

Sunday evening is NOT the time to be travelling north, but any other time other than your regular rush hours are usually pretty good unless there is a wreck.
