- lbrjetExplorerWe took 321 from Boone to Johnson City last summer. Was an easy and scenic drive.
- jtovosrExplorerWhat your opinion on coming from Bristol to Boone, I'll be in Bristol for the Nascar Race & thinking of checking out Boone, the map shows 435 to 34 to Boone.
I'm driving a 45 ft MH towing a Silverado. - jw99ExplorerGo the route that bobandjoyce recommended. I use to drive from Johnson City to Winston Salem on a regular basis and that was my preferred route. Avoid 321 and definitely avoid 421.

I would suggest avoiding 321 around Wautaga lake. From Elizabethton stay on 19 thru Roan Mountain to Elk Park Hwy. At Newland take hwy 181 over to NC 105. 105 will lead you into Boone. This route is 53 miles from Elizabethton to Boone and avoids the twists and turns by the lake. I pull a fifth wheel this route.
Thank you, I'll check this route out. After 12 years, I'm tired of going I40 to Morganton, and need a change since Im retired and in no hurry. - lawaco12Explorer III would take 40 at least to Morgontown then 18 in to Wilksboro. 321 from Johnson City is bad enough in a car would not want to pull a 5th wheel through there of any size, Had to take that route when 40 was closed 4 yrs ago Its a r l turning almost all way
- PopsExplorerActually thru Roan Mtn(same as bobandjoyce) is the route I go heading west out of Boone to TN. Sort of like the back roads instead of 321 or the interstate. I like it the best, but I have a class C without a toad, and was not sure about toeing. bobandjoyce pulls a fiver, so that should answer that question.

- Blue_Ridge_2ExplorerIf you"re going to Merlefest in Wilkesboro, I would take I-40 to Conover and then Hwy 16 North to Wilkesboro. I have towed this way many times. Hwy 16 is much easier than Hwy 321 IMHO. Some very nice COE parks near Wilkesboro.

Yes that area around Watauga lake looks like you are constantly turning. I might better stick to I-40 pulling a 35' fiver, or there would be some mad folks behind me on the two lane.
That was initially why I edited my original post....It's longer, but I 40 from Knoxville to where you get off 40 to get to Boone would be an "easier tow", I would think....That was my first post, but erased, thinking you had towed on 321 before.. - garyp4951Explorer IIIYes that area around Watauga lake looks like you are constantly turning.
