We did the north side of the lake last summer. I highly recommend spending some time at Sleeping Giant PP. Beautiful area, lots of hiking trails. Some really nice large private waterfront sites. There are some pretty good grades along that stretch of highway but fantastic lookout points. Lake Superior PP is also really nice.
Fall colours are best in mid October but check with the parks for availability as some have shorter seasons. Very few of the provincial parks have full hookups. Most have hydro/water sections and a dump station. Shouldn't have trouble getting a site that time of year but if you want the good ones you should book in advance.
