Las Vegas, NV to Lee Vining, CA

Getting several different routes using Microsoft Streets & Trips vs Garmin Nuvi.

Thinking US 95 to US 6 to US 395
Is it worth it to take a shortcut on CA 120 from Benton across to 395?
Traveling in a 40 foot Class A with minivan in tow.
  • Original Poster here - we did take the 120 shortcut from Benton to 395. As mentioned there were some rolling dips that you didn't want to take too quickly. It was also pretty slow in the very beginning with several switchbacks. All in all, we thought it was a pretty drive and would take it again if in the area. We really enjoyed our time in the Lee Vining side of Yosemite. We drove through Tioga Pass 3 days in a row in the minivan and were just as impressed each time. We hiked out to North Dome from Tioga Road (about 10 miles round trip). Would highly recommend that hike to anyone wanting a different view of Half Dome and the Yosemite Valley.

Hmmmm....we don't remember any 'dropoffs'???? To us it was an easy drive.

There are several good deep take your breath away dips out on the flats past the first steep grade, but before you get to the Jeffery Pine forest. You have to be traveling at a good speed to really enjoy them.
  • Thanks for the responses. We have actually been to Yosemite before but didn't get to see the north east portion of the park because the road was still closed. We are planning to park the RV at Lee Vining area and then travel into the park in the minivan. We have been watching the plow progress on the National Park website. As of May 3rd update, they are hoping to open the road on May 11th. We'll have to wait to see how it goes.

After we leave Lee Vining we are going to head north on 395 to check out the Amazon location at Fernley, NV. We have worked at Amazon in Campbellsville, KY already and thought this would be a good time to check out the campgrounds around Fernley.

  • 120 is a fantastic drive. But beware there are some real good whoopty whoops west of Benton. The road follows the terrain up and down, not any big hills, but there are some great drop offs that'll take your breath away.
  • Hwy 120 is an awesome drive! We did it in reverse from Lee Vining/395. From 6 it's open scenery but closer to Lee Vining it gets curvy (not extreme) and goes through a beautiful terrain. It's very doable with a 40' MH. Have a good trip.
