Las Vegas to South Lake Tahoe

We're going from Las Vegas up to SLTahoe in mid May in a 45 ft. and towing. Looking for info from you that have done this. Would 95 out of Vegas or go over and pickup 395 be best for us? Thanks for any and all suggestions! J.L.
  • Kingsbury Grade is a good shortcut to get from 395 to South Lake Tahoe, but not in a 45 footer! So if your GPS tries to get you to go that way it would be a good idea not to do it. You'll be much happier sticking to 50.
  • Thanks everyone for your information! We learned the hard way NOT to try roads that were unknown to us without asking this great group first! We were leaving a park in Temecula a few years ago and decided to take a "closer" road to get to the Interstate and even though the day before we drove about 10 miles of that "closer" road to check it out, it proved to be the 11 miles is where the road from hell began!! My wife still cringes when I bring up that adventure! J.L.
  • I'm doing nevadanicks offering in the opposite direction after Easter. I've been on it a couple times before and it's all good road and an easy drive.
  • As others have said, 95 is a good road and an easy drive. A few small towns along the way with reduced speeds and often local police checking. Tonopah is probably the best place to fuel up if needed. Its about 1/2 way. There is a decent sized Chevron towards the North end of town that you can get an RV in & out fairly easily.
395 will be more scenic, but there are some pretty decent grades & a few curvy spots in the road. 395 has a lower speed limit (55 mph in CA if towing). Lone Pine, Bridgeport, Bishop, are all pretty neat places to stop & stretch your legs if time permits.

95 to Shurz through Yerington to 395 to 50 to Tahoe

95 is a good road. Not exciting but an easy drive.
