layover spot in va.

we are taking our first trip with our 2002 damon escaper 3975. We are going to myrtle beach sc,from Syracuse ny. Our route I think will be rt 81 to Winchester Va where we will pick up rt 50 to 17. Looking for a good Walmart or other safe parking area to spend the night at or around the half way point TY Woodroe
  • Hello and Welcome to the Top of Virginia,

There are two Wal-Marts in the Winchester area, one is the shopping district which is south of the downtown area and the other is West Rt50, west of Rt37, which is on the west side of town. This is the one I would recommend. You can still get Rt50 East by going Rt37 south, then I81 north to the Rt50 Exit.

Also, Caution on taking Rt50 east to Rt17 south, the section of Rt. 17 between Rt50 & I66 was/is heavily patrolled, it's a beautiful ride though the country side, in other words do the speed limit, nothing more, if you are in a hurry go I81 south to I66 east.

There is a Wal-Mart north of Martinsburg, WV (I81 exit 20). And there is a Wal-Mart Rt522 & Tasker Rd south of Winchester. Plus, there is one Rt522/340 north of I66, on the north side of Front Royal.

    Hope this helps, take care.
  • We have stayed at Claytor Lake State Park and some people like Ft Chiswell. They are both around the half way point for us.http://www.campingfriend.com/fortchiswellrvcampground/

We have found it hard to get sleep in a rest area or Walmart. Depending on what time you pull over,a Cracker Barrel might be a better choice. They usually have RV spaces and are closed from 11pm to 6am so you can wake up and get breakfast. There are plenty of them along I-81.
  • Friend of mine have stayed at the walmart a few times. Off exit 282 in Virginia. That's just below Winchester.
They stayed there just last Sunday on the way home from the races.
  • I will tell you the camping world in Winchester was a bit of a pain to find room to park my truck and trailer to even go shopping. I've had that issue at that Camping World and the one by roanoake. They have repair trailers parked everywhere.
  • I can't help you with the area, but we were headed to Florida two weeks ago and were looking for a Walmart to stop overnight at. I looked at the stores nearby (check cashing, pawn shops, etc..) I continued on down the road and found another Walmart. I think you can tell a lot about the area and just get a gut feeling. Do you have "The Next Exit" book? It's helpful.
  • Several points near Winchester.

There is Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races. Parking only but the burgers in the sports bar are pretty good.

Winchester has a Camping World. I think that they may allow overnighting. Call to check this.

There is a Flying J off I-81 just before Winchester. These normally allow overnights.

If Winchester is too soon for you, there is a Flying J between Fredericksburg and Richmond (exit 104 on I95, I think). Fredericksburg will have a Walmart that you can check on.
