You get a tourist visa to enter Mexico for a period of 180 days, you are given an import permit for a vehicle for 180 days that is not a pull trailer or a 5fth wheel trailer, or an RV.
Recreational Vehicles A class, B class, C class, 5th, pop-ups ETC. these recieve a ten year permit and those you can either leave them there or cross the border multiple times as long as you do not surrender the calcomania or import permit for the 10 year permit period.
When you exit either at the border or at an airport the tourist visa will state that you have imported a vehicle attached to that visa, and you have to remove the vehicle or surrender it to Customs for the duration of time that you are out of the country.
The same applies to tourists from Canada or Mexico that get a tourist visa for entering the United States and have a vehicle, 180 days for both and after that you are in violation of the permit, my sister was working in Mexico for Ford Motors and came to visit and the customs officer gave the vehicle a 180 day import period for the vehicle, she could stay being an American, not the vehicle with Distrito Federal plates.
If two pesons entered the country, one will have the visa with the vehicle identified in it, as long as only one person exits and the other one stays no problem because the vehicle has not been abandoned or sold, and that person that stays behind is responsible for the vehicle.
