Specific Mexican Law
Your Temporary Import Permit Permismo Temporal de Vehiculos
Is solely, only and exclusively valid as long as the FMM that it was issued under is valid. This is why a TIP is only issued AFTER a valid FMM is in possession. It's the first thing Banjercito asks for at the window.
How this law is interpreted is like Mexico itself - unpredictable.
Here is an example of some actual -this is reality- highway checkpoint exams. The SSP reviews the TIP. Verifies VIN. Dates and data. Is the TIP applicant or spouse aboard? Next comes the FMM. The mode of entry was noted, in my cases, multiples. Dates agreement between TIP and FMM. In my cases they all agreed. I did ask the jefe de SSP at a couple of retenes what would occur if the FMM did not agree with the TIP. All of them answered "problemos"
Take this any which way you want to. This is a recollection of reality. I am not familiar with the protocol with 10-year permits but gringos have told me the TIP / FMM restrictions are a lot less rigid. This needs further examination.
