The Mexican government is now using more computers, it is going to be harder to "get away" with what was done in the past so it is not worth trying to defeat the system.
If you have to travell take the vehicle to the Aduana and explain that you need to go back home for some time, and surrender the vehicle for temporary impounding, always give them more time to be out of town so that you come back "earlier" than what you told them, that way you have not abandoned the vehicle.
The 10 year permit is not affected by how many times "YOU" go out and back in to Mexico, the vehicle can stay in Mexico for the 10 years, but a vehicle with a 180 DAY temporary permit MUST be out of mexico at the same time as the person who temporarlly imported it, unless it is surrendered to customs for inpounding while the owner is out of the country.
I have travelled to Mexico for 48 years on and off and I have studied in Mexico, and the 180 day visa has always been there until the 10 year permits where started, that started a whole new game for the turista.
