You had better be driving a POS to leave it in any impound lot. You will not recognize it when you return. The sad part is that the regulations are there to prevent Mexican citizens from importing cars without paying duties. But tourists are being penalized for the lack of honest citizens. Mexicans truly believe that laws are optional. A few years ago an enterprising rancher had property in the area of KM21(Nogales). He built a makeshift road on the North side of 21. The road exited on the South side of km21. He had a toll booth where Mexicans could pay $100 and get past km21 without paying any duties or taxes on a used car. Some of these importers would place the cars on an informal sales lot in Hermosillo. Aduana raided this sales lot and tried to impound the vehicles. The importers formed a human chain and claimed they paid the $100 to a rancher and that was there way of importing the car!!! Only in Mexico.
