If you are in San Diego why don't you take 8 East, it starts in San Diego at Sunset Cliffs Blv and Nimitz Blvd, granted you have to go over the Lagunas but it betas having to drive to San Bernardino and then down to the 8.
Or maybe the downgrade from Jacumbe to Ocotillo is to steep and you prefer to go on flatter routes, it seems to me that the detour is not worth the two hours drive to meet the eight again when you are already on top of it.
