I'd rather have a high caliber rifle than a shotgun in these situations. Another question to ask is are weapons allowed in national or state parks? And what are the laws and regulations when a weapon in your possession when passing through them?
Okay, I've got to respond to this one. There are several Federal and Local camping sites in AK where it is suggested that you carry your shotgun even while fishing in the river or lake.
A shotgun with a bird load followed by two rifled slug loads will certainly deter a bear. If I lived in AK I would certainly carry a 40 caliber magnum ss pistol, but, try carrying that in your country.
As far as parks are concerned, "come on". Don't show and don't bring it up but once again in your country the OP will have no problems, right?
