Limon Colorado to Hill City South Dakota

Good morning! Our summer trip is taking from Austin Texas to the Black Hills of South Dakota to Colorado and back home. I need a little route advice...

We will be spending one night at the Limon, Colorado KOA. From there our destination is Hill City, SD. I want to swing by Scotts Bluff, NE on the way up so I was considering taking Colorado-71 to Nebraska-71 to South Dakota-71 into Hot Springs, SD.

Has anyone taken this route? Is Scotts Bluff worth stopping for? Advice?

Thanks,
Chris

  • I would go over to 385 from Crawford and take it up to Hot Springs. 71 might be ok, but I haven't traveled it, so can't say for sure.
Spend a little time at Ft. Robinson at Crawford if you have the time. It's a well kept old Army fort that was in use until the 1960s. they have a good little film you can watch about its history.
  • A few years ago I used US385 south from Hot Springs to Sidney, it was a good road in case you go that way.
  • The roads in that part of the country are about like those in Texas, normally pretty good.
  • I've been through Scottsbluff and honestly can't remember anything special about it. When I drive from eastern Co area to my part time Black Hills home, I prefer the US385 route. Its a bit shorter in miles and a bit faster in time, but the real reason I prefer it, is that I enjoy stopping at the original Cabelas store in Sydney Neb. Like many of our route choices, it comes down to what interests you, your personal preferences and what you want to see along the way. There may be something in Scottsbluff that hits your fancy, but for me that attraction was found in Sydney Ne on the 385 route.
