Lincoln, NE to Muskegon, MI Avoiding Chicago Traffic

We're leaving for Muskegon tomorrow and would like to find the best route around Chicago traffic. Would it be better to take HWY 30 from Joliet?
  • Assuming you are driving straight through I would recommend getting an early start so you can get past the south side of Lake Michigan by 3:00. A lot of people go to Michigan for the weekend and traffic can get jammed up. It's possible that traffic might not be as bad as usual since last week was a holiday weekend.
  • Unless your driving straight through you'll hit it sometine saturday so your good to go.
Rt 30 is stoplight city I tried it once when I was on a construction job on US41 and US30 I lived west side of Joliet once was enough.
  • Take the ferry across the lake :) Or the Mac bridge around the top.
  • I followed somebody's magic route once south of town. never again. go I-80
    bumpy
  • X2 on I80. Expect a fair amount of truck traffic. I believe I94 in Indiana has construction going on. Google Maps can help find the fastest route. Be sure to have the traffic feature turned on. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of options.
