You could also go East at the start and then from the Buffalo, NY area either take I-90 W to I-79 to I-77 or else I-90 E to I-390 to I-86 to US 15 to I-81. Both of these are somewhat longer. This time of year it should usually be OK, but not too much longer and the Buffalo area especially may have a lot of snow at times.
