Start a little slow, pick a lower gear and use short hard stabs of the brakes. I usually use the manual control for the trailer brakes for those short stabs to keep the bigger truck brakes fully cool and ready.
People towed thru mountains before exhaust brakes (though they are nice). Interstate highways leave you quite a bit of margin for error. Especially if it's only a few miles long.
