A trucker once told me to use the same gear going down a grade that I used going up and I would be fine. He was right. Climbed up and down some of the steepest grades in the Rockies with no problems. Used hard braking to slow fast and let it coast up to speed again. Never over heated the brakes that way either. This was with a motor home so using trailer brakes would be a new deal for me. Same principle though I would think.
