  • We've only had two occasions where I was very concerned. In each case, PA and OH, and had no way around it so i told DW to duck, which we both did. No problem.
  • Yes, actually a tunnel. Off I-75, norther GA, pallet truck dumped load in southbound lane. I took detour over to US41 and there was a tunnel with a sign about a block or two ahead, "low clearance." Think it was like 7'4" or so. Oops. Saw truckers on 41, so got in line, followed them and it gave an alternate route around tunnel. Worked out fine.

Just turned around and took alt. route

We traveled secondary/backwards majority of time........so 'low underpasses' were always a possibility. Oh well...no biggie.
Clearance signs were well placed. Plenty of fore warning.

I guess some cant comprehend Clickey

  • I second the Trucker's Road Atlas. On another thread someone else mentioned there's a smart phone app that has low bridges, etc. The east is definitely more problematic with low bridges but secondary roads.
  • Low overpasses are a bigger issue in the east. A trucker's atlas lists low overpasses by state and a little bit of trip planning goes a long way. If in doubt keep to routes that trucks run. There should be a sign warning you at the last turn off before the low overpass. NY marks bridges about a foot short so if you hit it, its your fault. Unless it's marked "ACTUAL" in which case it's a true height. Confused? Since you are from AZ your risk should be low provided you read your road signs. The old standard was 13'6" but new or upgraded highways is 14'6" min. clearance.
