If you want, you can get your FMM in advance also. the Discover Baja Travel Club is the only place that I'm aware of in the U.S. that can issue FMM's. They will mail it to you or, if you're crossing at one of the San Diego crossings, you can stop by their office and get it there. Of course you have to be a member but it's worth it because of the other benefits that they offer; including Mexican Insurance with the Legal rider at good prices. I've been using them for years.
However, you still have to get the FMM stamped when you cross the border. This is a pre-paid FMM with all the data already filled out so you save a trip to the Banjercito and a second trip to the immigration office.
If you are crossing at Lukeville, just walk across and get it stamped. Then you can spend the day and night at Organ Pipe National Monument and cross early in the morning with all your paperwork done! Organ Pipe is a great place to hike or car-tour.
