Mackinaw City to Platte River Campground in MI?

Hi everyone,

We are enjoying our first visit to beautiful Michigan and will travel from Mackinaw City to Platte River Campground in the next several days. IT looks like US 31 is the best route -- can anyone tell us if that route is suitable for big rigs? Also, are there good places to get diesel between those two points? We drive a 40 DP with a toad.

Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Thanks so much everyone for the quick responses. RVers continue to prove that this is one of the friendliest, most helpful communities anywhere!
  • Hwy 31 is an easy drive with a big rig. As you go through Petosky, Charlevoix or Traverse City you'll find many stations. Take the gentle canoe trip down the Platte to Lake Michigan. The canoe livery is near the campground entrance. Fantastic trip and you'll probably see the salmon beginning to come upstream. Enjoy Platte River...we volunteered there for 9 seasons! All the little surroundings communities are neat.
  • Apache Trout restaurant on the west side of the west Traverse bay. Very good food. Oops hold on. I forgot. Diesel pusher. Not sure you could park around there.
  • Search tunnel of trees. Its along the shoreline near harbor springs/petoskey. I haven't been through there in a long time but its beautiful. Platte/ crystal Lk area is very nice. Great beach at the mouth of the Platte
