MEXICOWANDERER

From Culiacan to La Union, Mex 15, and Mex 200 is going to be a mess. Both the tropical storm and now the hurricane are going to bash their brain out on the Sierra Madre del Sur. The "enemy" is biblical grade rainfall. Cuatro Caminos in Michocan is reporting THREE FEET of rainfall. But the humongous arroyos there are draining it all into the big lake that is taking the influx in stride. La presa Infiernillo has CFE hydroelectric generators to power the MITTAL steel mill in Lazaro Cardenas.
Rock slides within steep cut highway banks and 20 ton bouncing boulders added to pavement washouts is the specific obstacle of travel in this 700 mile stretch of coastline, during the storm and for say seven days afterward.
Residents in Mexico rely on back channel gossip to keep abreast of local news and highway closures during disasters. The marinas have visited me several times after a hurricane, asked me if I spoke Spanish and then "Hay herridos?" are there any people injured?
A not half bad way to learn basic information requires a person to speak Spanish if they life outside of the country. In country, television News such as Televisa and Azteca have spot news reports but nothing in depth.
Without question, both Angeles Verdes personnel and Bus lines like ESTRELLA BLANCA will reveal if bus service has been restored, and highways are open. The word you need to learn is DESVIACIONES. If there are Desviaciones it means DETOURS and Mexican detours can be destructive to an RV. Rip off the plumbing and snap springs time. Use wisdom if the word desviaciones is heard. Hurry rush rush, is an open invitation to damaging a rig.
Unfortunately, damage to RV parks is way down the list of things to report to the public. Utter guesswork gleaned by overall scenes of destruction (or not) of regions is the only way to get a clue. Camper trucks especially 4WD will be the first ones likely "on scene" to report on RV park conditions and if there is a chance they will open soon.
And keep in mind fr too many Mexicanos live from hand to mouth. So postponing a visit is not nearly as bad to them as avoiding the area altogether for the season. After a big storm I am likely to tip two dollars to a grocery bagger or other service provider. Please open your wallet. Unlike charitable organizations with 50% of donations deducted for "expenses" these tips repair homes and purchase food.
