It's the California part of US199 that has the most curves as it follows a major river. The Oregon part is comparatively easy. Once you are in Medford, there isn't a realistic alternative way to the coast.
I'd suggest spending your time in Medford viewing other things in the Jeep. Off of US199 is Oregon Caves. NE from Medford is OR62 and the upper Rogue River (and Crater Lake). South there is Jacksonville and Applegate Lake. You could even take Bear camp Rd (paved BLM and FS) to the coast (Grants Pass to Gold Beach). Plus your friends will probably want to show you places.

I just received a new custom fly rod and want to fish in OR. I would think there are good trout streams close to Medford.
