Medora to rushmore

I'm going to make a trip up north next month. We will be heading to Medora from Yellowstone then down to Rushmore. Anyone know what US85 south is like? Looks flat on google maps. Just wasn't sure if there is anything I'm missing like low train bridges and such. This is my first long trip with my 5er and I'm a little nervous. Looking at 3400 miles round trip in 2 weeks.

This is a short enough route that I'm sure you could summarize what MDW has to say. I wouldn't be surprised if there is nothing of note down to Sturges and on to Rapid City. There may be notes about routes south of Sturges.

  • This is why I love this board. Everyone is so helpful.

Google maps takes me to Sturgis and then down i90 through rapid city. I'm staying at the mt Rushmore koa. Would it be better to just stay on 85 and 385 all the way down?
  • we drove down 85 a few years ago and found it uneventful and mostly wide open spaces. Deadwood will be a busy little tourist city, but the routing through town is fairly easy, just slow going.
  • We made this is reverse last year--Custer SD to Medora. Not a problem. You should expect no surprises. I just made sure I knew where to stop for fuel. We did find a nice restaurant--must have been Buffalo, SD. Note sure about that.
